The newly erupted Molars and Premolars are like a sponge when they erupt. They absorb a variety of nutrients form the saliva. Along with good nutrients, they also inherit bacterial load form the environment. The presence of exfoliating milk teeth and erupting new teeth makes it difficult to maintain the oral hygiene to top it up.
There are deep fissures in the newly erupted permanent teeth, that if not protected can result in dental caries at an early age. Sealants are a simple way to seal off those occlusal surfaces.
Dental Sealants are thin plastic like coating that fill in the grooves on the chewing surfaces of the tooth and protect them from tooth decay. They are usually applied to Permanent molars (Back tooth) to prevent bacteria and food from getting stuck in the creases that naturally occur on these surfaces.
The best time to apply the sealants is as soon as the tooth erupts. The complete procedure is easy and painfree. The life span for these sealants is anywhere between 7 to 10 years.
